THE LEGION OF MARY

*

The Legion of Mary is a worldwide organisation of lay people in the Catholic Church. The organisation was founded in Dublin, Ireland on September 7, 1921.

WHAT IS IT?

The Legion of Mary is a worldwide organisation of lay people in the Catholic Church. The organisation was founded in Dublin, Ireland on September 7, 1921. At present, the membership is well over 3 million active members and 15 million auxiliary [praying] members. The main purpose of Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members.

A unit of the Legion of Mary is termed a praesidium and is established with the permission of the Parish Priest. Each praesidium bears a title of Our Blessed Lady. Legionaries are under the guidance of a Spiritual Director named by the Parish Priest.

PRAESIDIUM - 'OUR LADY HELP OF THE SICK'

Fr. Eugene Delahunte O. P launched the Praesidium 'Our Lady Help of the Sick' in St. Finbar's in the Marian month of October 1996. The first meeting was held on November 14, 1996. At present our Spiritual Director is Fr. Michael Hayden O.P.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS?

To strengthen the spiritual life of its members who, taking Mary as their model, endeavor to imitate her virtues, especially Faith, Charity and Humility.

To provide assistance to the Parish Priest by performing various apostolic works under the supervision of the Spiritual Director.

WORK UNDERTAKEN
  • Home to home visitation, visitation of the aged and the lonely, visitation of the sick at home, in the Hospital and in the Nursing Homes.
  • Conducting religious education classes in Government Schools.
  • Distributing Rosaries, Catholic News and other religious items.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
There are two types of membership: active and auxiliary.

Active members attend weekly meetings and perform the work that is assigned to them.

At present we have eight (8) active members. We meet in the Sacristy on a Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. for prayer, planning and discussion. Then in pairs, we perform the work assigned which is reported upon at the next meeting. Our meeting lasts one hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

The requirement for active membership is a desire to participate in the Church's apostolate through the Legion.

Auxiliary members undertake to give the Legion the assistance of their prayers. They are asked to recite daily the prayers in the Legion Tessera, which is given to each Auxiliary member. We have twenty (20) auxiliary members.

The requirement for auxiliary membership is good will and the sincere intention of saying the prescribed prayers.
